Panopticism

When we feel that we are watched or observed by somebody we always tend to act in a different way than usual. We always try to change our way of behaving or acting when we are being watched in order not to make the other awar of what we are really doing. Here the gaze is upon us because our freedom to gaze was removed. Faucault called it « Panopticism » which is « simply a metaphor for how society's institutions tend to observe us » Panopticism shows how the functioning of power affects the behavior of an individual.A good example is prisoners who are always watched and their freedom is removed from them because they never know when they exactly are watched so this make them careful in their way of acting. Another example of panopticism is the cameras that are put in markets. When were are shopping on a store we find cameras on every corner and this is to make us know that we are being watched. Therefor we keep careful not to do an illegal action because we will be catched by the camera. So if someone wants to still. Seeing those cameras will discourage him and will not make him risk. Those examples make the theory of faucualt « Panopticism » works in diferent domains that lead to security and safety.
