Televison and the Public Sphere

Radio, newspapers, internet and television or those media show how public sphere can make connections and create discussions between people from different categories. Also those media tools show how people use those media to participate in the public sphere through discussion, idea sharing or debates.

Television can be considered as the most used mass media tool for public sphere. Television facilitate the public sphere since it allows discussions between people. This medium played a remarkable role for discussions and idea sharing because it created a public space for various kinds of conversations that may happen between people while watching different kind of issues (Political, social, debates…). We can see that many political, social... discussions are done while watching a political debate or a social issue. Television gives access to the audience to different information and news that may create discussion and idea sharing through which they can create judgments and views that will rise discussions and debates.

Anorexia verses Models

Those are examples of models who normally represent beauty in the media while they are sick. The photographer is trying to address a message and see how viewers will interpret them. Those are not models those are sick girls who try to adress to the young audience a wrong message which is beauty equals being very thin (anorexic). Those are oppositional images because they reflect a problem that many girls are sufering from because of their low self esteem. While looking a those images I felt disgusting and also I felt sad about those young girls who think that their beauty depends on being very thin which is on reality being sick. Those visuals play a real role on adressing a message to the spectator in order to convince them about the real truth of those models and the real problems they realy hide.

Realism

I was really attracted by this painting because it is so natural and realistic. This painting represents and describes a world in its natural image. This is “an art style of the mid 19th century, which fostered the ides that everyday people and events are worthy subjects for important art”. This painting represents realism which means how powerful an image is to represent and reflect the reality of the world by introducing real facts that are taken from our society to make it credible and realistic.

Mirror Stage

This image represents a child who is establishing his ego by watchig at a mirror. This stage makes the baby distanguish between himself and the other and draws his own identiy using external sources.

Panopticism

When we feel that we are watched or observed by somebody we always tend to act in a different way than usual. We always try to change our way of behaving or acting when we are being watched in order not to make the other awar of what we are really doing. Here the gaze is upon us because our freedom to gaze was removed. Faucault called it « Panopticism » which is « simply a metaphor for how society's institutions tend to observe us » Panopticism shows how the functioning of power affects the behavior of an individual.A good example is prisoners who are always watched and their freedom is removed from them because they never know when they exactly are watched so this make them careful in their way of acting. Another example of panopticism is the cameras that are put in markets. When were are shopping on a store we find cameras on every corner and this is to make us know that we are being watched. Therefor we keep careful not to do an illegal action because we will be catched by the camera. So if someone wants to still. Seeing those cameras will discourage him and will not make him risk. Those examples make the theory of faucualt « Panopticism » works in diferent domains that lead to security and safety.

Voyeurism

Looking at this image makes us remember lot of things, we are all human beings and we are curious to know about people’s private life even if it does not concern us at all. Sometimes we love to look and gaze a person’s life with desire and admiration to know what’s going on their life and what their problems are or gaze to see a person in a private situation and so on without being noticed about this curiosity that may annoy the peoples we are observing. *

This image is a representation of ones of the tools we use to gaze someone and it is specially a tool of Voyeurism which means to the pleasure to look without being seen. Besides, voyeurisms is when a person observes for example a couples engaged in sexual acts or are with their underwear or dressed in an attractive way that may attract the viewer attention and makes him/her concentrated to look in a silent way without letting the other pay attention. I find this image very representative for voyeurism because a person can gaze a situation without being seen or noticed espacity sexual or private situations.
